In each demonstration Richard will show you how a range of tools and chucks can be used to best advantage.  As he works, Richard will explain the techniques he uses and exactly what goes into each piece regards design, form, and function. No matter what your level of expertise, you can learn heaps watching this master woodturner in action.

Between the formal demonstrations you can meet Richard who is happy to answer your questions, offer unbiased advice on lathe tools and equipment, demonstrate specific techniques, or sign copies of his books.

3.15pm daily Tips, Tricks and Techniques

The lessons of something over 30 years of woodworking won’t all fit into something over 30 minutes of talking of course.  But it would be silly to waste the chance to gain from someone else’s experience of so many problems addressed, as well as stuff-ups thought about to be prevented next time.

BRUCE BELL PROFILE
Bruce is a former apprentice of the year and a qualified builder. He lives on a rural property just outside of Toowoomba in Queensland.

Bruce commenced woodturning as a hobby in 1971 and decided to follow his passion for the craft a few years later, by turning full time as a living.  He decided to use our native outback timbers and has developed an extensive knowledge of these exciting species over the years.

He has taught woodturning to many both in Australia and around the world.  In 1972 he built the first Travelling Woodturning School in a semi trailer and took it to some of the remote towns of our country to further spread his knowledge of this fascinating craft.

Bruce has demonstrated at the Timber and Working with Wood Shows for many years on various aspects of woodturning. On his many trips to the USA he has demonstrated at several symposiums, along with teaching at the John C.  Campbell folk school North Carolina.

He is also a member of the International Wood Collectors Society and organised their 2006 International Conference at Toowoomba.

Bruce enjoys making bowls and other useful items, from our variety of native timbers which he considers to be among the best in the world for their color and character. His works have been purchased by governments as gifts for dignitaries around the world.

ARTIST PROFILE - TIM SKILTON
Tim’s main interest is to work with the large range of Australian timbers. More recently he became interested in the desert timbers including the inland acacias.

He often works with the twisted and knurled roots and trunk sections.  Trying to impose a classical form onto these shapes from nature can often result in something unique and exciting.  The limitations of form imposed by working on a wood lathe, as against the freedom of form that a carver has, is always a major challenge to him.

He salvages material from roadside clearing, creek crossings, fence lines and mining company grid lines.
